Deleting a DNS zone
This process covers removing an existing DNS zone.
Warning
Once a DNS zone is deleted, all DNS records it contains become inactive. Domains whose nameservers point to this zone will no longer be reachable. Carefully check whether the zone is still needed before deleting it.
Prerequisites
Before deleting, check:
- that the correct zone is selected
- whether the domain still actively points to this zone
- whether important records have been backed up beforehand
Step-by-step guide
1. Sign in to the customer portal
Sign in with your account in the customer portal.
2. Open the zone
Navigate to DNS Zone in the main menu and open the zone you want to delete.
3. Start the deletion
Click Delete in the top right corner.
4. Confirm the security prompt
Carefully check that the correct zone is selected, then confirm the deletion.
The zone is first moved to the trash and becomes inactive immediately.
Restoring a zone
As long as a deleted zone is still in the trash, it can be restored:
- Open DNS Zone in the main menu.
- Enable the Trashed filter to show deleted zones.
- Open the zone in question.
- Click Restore.
Permanently deleting a zone
To remove a zone irrevocably:
- Open the zone from the trash as described above.
- Click Force Delete.
- Confirm the security prompt.
Warning
Permanent deletion cannot be undone. All data belonging to the zone is lost irrecoverably.
Follow-up checks
After deleting, check:
- that the zone no longer appears in the active overview
- that affected domains have been switched to another DNS zone or other nameservers
- that no email or website outages resulted from the deletion
