Deleting a domain

This process permanently deletes a registered domain.

Warning

Deleting a domain is final – unlike DNS zones, there's no trash and no way to restore it. The domain is also released back to the registry and can subsequently be registered by someone else. Carefully check beforehand whether the domain is still needed.

Prerequisites

Before deleting, check:

  • that the correct domain was selected
  • whether the domain is still used for websites or email addresses
  • that losing the domain permanently is acceptable, since it cannot be restored

Step-by-step guide

1. Sign in to the customer portal

Sign in with your account in the customer portal.

2. Open the domain

Open the domain to delete under Domain and go to the Edit section.

3. Prepare the deletion

In the Delete domain section, a Name field is shown.

4. Enter the name to confirm

Enter the full domain name exactly as displayed.

5. Confirm the deletion

Click Delete. If the entered text doesn't match the domain name exactly, the deletion is rejected.

Follow-up checks

After deleting, check:

  • that the domain no longer appears in the overview
  • that hosting assignments, email addresses or DNS zones set up under this domain were adjusted
  • that the deletion was documented internally

Common issues

Deletion doesn't go through

Possible cause:

  • the entered text doesn't exactly match the domain name

Wrong domain deleted

Possible cause:

  • the domain wasn't clearly verified before confirming; since there's no way to restore it, the domain would need to be registered again – provided nobody else has registered it in the meantime
