Transferring a domain
This page describes how to transfer a domain to another provider – that is, transferring it away from us. For the reverse direction (transferring a domain to us), see Registering a domain.
Toggling the transfer lock
The transfer lock prevents an unwanted transfer of the domain to another provider. The lock must be lifted before a transfer is possible.
- Open the desired domain under Domain.
- Go to the Transfer section.
- The Toggle transfer lock section shows the current status (Enabled or Disabled).
- Click the button to change the status and confirm the prompt.
Note
Re-enable the transfer lock after a completed transfer to protect the domain from unauthorized transfers.
Retrieving the auth code
Transferring a domain to another provider requires the auth code (also called a transfer code or EPP code).
- Open the Update auth code section under Transfer.
- The current auth code and its expiration are shown if one has already been generated. Otherwise, Not set is shown.
- Click the button to generate a new auth code.
- Confirm the prompt.
Warning
Generating a new auth code invalidates any previously issued code. Only generate it shortly before it's needed for the transfer at the new provider.
Step-by-step guide: transferring a domain to another provider
- Lift the transfer lock as described above.
- Generate a current auth code.
- Provide the auth code to the new provider and initiate the transfer there.
- Confirm the WHOIS confirmation email sent as part of the transfer, if applicable.
Follow-up checks
After the transfer, check:
- that the domain is shown correctly at the new provider
- that the domain disappears from our overview once the transfer is complete
Common issues
New provider rejects the transfer
Possible causes:
- the transfer lock wasn't lifted
- an outdated or already-invalidated auth code was used
Auth code can't be generated
Possible cause:
- the domain is still within a lock period following its most recent registration or transfer (depends on the extension)
