Registering a domain

This process registers a new domain, or transfers a domain already registered with another provider to us using an auth code.

Prerequisites

Before registering, check:

  • whether the desired domain is still available
  • which plan (TLD/plan) is needed
  • whether an existing contact should be used, or a new one created
  • for a transfer: whether you have the auth code from the current provider

Step-by-step guide

1. Sign in to the customer portal

Sign in with your account in the customer portal.

2. Start the order

Open Domain in the main menu and click Order product at the top right.

3. Fill in the details

Enter the following information:

  • Plan – the desired extension (TLD) and its plan
  • Domain name – the full desired domain name, e.g. example.com
  • Auth code (optional) – only fill this in if you want to transfer the domain from another provider; leaving it empty performs a new registration
  • Contact – select an already-saved contact, or fill in the New contact section (first name, last name, address, city, postal code, country, phone, email)
  • Accept terms of service (required)

4. Review your input

Before submitting, check in particular:

  • that the domain name is spelled correctly
  • for a transfer: that the auth code was entered correctly
  • that the contact details are complete and correct

5. Complete the order

Finish the order process.

Result

For a new registration, the domain becomes visible under Domain in the overview once the registry has completed processing.

For a transfer, the domain is initially shown with the status "transfer in progress". This can take several days depending on the extension. Check your email inbox during this time – a WHOIS confirmation email is often required to complete the transfer.

Follow-up checks

After registering or transferring, check:

  • that the domain appears correctly in the overview
  • that the expiration date under Registered until is set correctly
  • that the assigned contacts are correct
  • whether the nameservers should be pointed at our DNS servers (see Managing nameservers)

Common issues

Domain can't be registered

Possible causes:

  • the domain is already taken
  • the domain already exists in the customer portal under this name
  • required contact fields are missing or incorrect

Transfer doesn't complete

Possible causes:

  • the auth code is incorrect or expired
  • the transfer lock at the previous provider wasn't lifted
  • the WHOIS confirmation email wasn't confirmed within the deadline
