Scaling and reinstalling

This page describes changing a server's plan (scaling) and reinstalling its operating system.

Scaling a server

Note

The Scale section is only available if upgrades or downgrades are offered for the current plan. If not, a corresponding notice is shown.

1. Open the desired server and go to the Scale section.
2. Select the new target plan.
3. Review the options:
   • Keep disk size (enabled by default)
   • Automatically shut down server – must be enabled, since the server is shut down for scaling
   • Terms of service – must be accepted
4. Click Scale.

Note

The server is automatically shut down during scaling and is unreachable during that time.

Reinstalling a server

Warning

Reinstalling erases all data on the server irreversibly and replaces it with a fresh installation of the selected operating system. Be sure to create a backup or snapshot before reinstalling.

1. Open the desired server and go to the Reinstall section.
2. Select the desired operating system.
3. Check the Confirm checkbox.
4. Click Reinstall.

Follow-up checks

After scaling, check:

• whether the server restarted automatically after completion, or needs to be started manually
• that the expected performance (CPU, RAM, disk) of the new plan is available

After reinstalling, check:

• that the server is running the selected operating system
• that access via SSH or console works as expected
• whether previously configured services and data need to be set up again

Common issues

Server unreachable after scaling

Possible causes:

• the server wasn't automatically restarted after scaling
• the network configuration inside the operating system needs adjusting

Data missing after reinstalling

Possible cause:

• no backup or snapshot was created before reinstalling
